Dr. Chitaley received her PhD from the Department of Physiology at the University of Michigan under the guidance of the internationally known hypertension expert, Dr. Clinton Webb. Her post-doctoral training was conducted at the Department of Surgery at the University of Washington under the mentorship of the Dr. Alexander Clowes.
Research Interests
Dr. Chitaley's research background is in mechanisms of vascular contraction, migration and proliferation, especially as they pertain to pathologies such as hypertension, restenosis and erectile dysfunction.
Dr. Chitaley is currently collaborating with Hunter Wessells, MD, an established researcher, and clinical surgeon with expertise in urogenital trauma, reconstructive surgery and erectile dysfunction. Together, Drs Chitaley and Wessells aim to combine expertise in basic science and clinical medicine to elucidate the mechanism(s) underlying diabetes-associated erectile dysfunction, and identify potential novel therapeutic targets.
Dr. Chitaley is currently funded through the NIDDK (NIH) with a pilot and feasibility grant aimed at testing the general hypothesis that decreased levels of the adipokine, adiponectin, in type II diabetes, contributes to attenuated penile endothelial function and erectile dysfunction associated with this disease state, using db/db mice and in vitro models.
Through the partnership with Dr. Wessells, Dr. Chitaley is also actively involved in researching the role of increased levels of the copper binding protein, ceruloplasmin, in penile endothelial dysfunction during diabetes. They are currently using overexpression techniques, as well as loss of function strategies involving the use of ceruloplasmin-knockout mice in these studies.

Dr. Chitaley is a member of the American Physiologic Society and is an Ad-hoc reviewer for the American Journal of Physiology: Heart and Circulatory Physiology, the Journal of Pharmacology and Experimental Therapeutics, the Journal of Urology, International Journal of Impotence Research, the British Journal of Pharmacology, and Hypertension.
Honors:
She has more than 20 publications or book chapters and has presented her work at national and international conferences. Dr. Chitaley has also been the recipient of young investigator awards from the American Physiological Society and Merck, as well as awards from the Sexual Medicine Society, International Society for Impotence Research, American Society for Investigative Pathology, the University of Washington, and the Medical College of Georgia.
