Sub-Internship Program

Each year, the urology department has been fortunate to have over 250 applicants vying for a position in our residency program. We are members of the Electronic Residency Application Service (ERAS) and utilize this excellent centralized application system to review applicants. During the latter part of September, the program director reviews all applications to the program, being sure to identify certain qualifications that might make for mutual success:

  1. completeness of application,
  2. USMLE scores,
  3. Medical School of attendance,
  4. Letter of recommendation,
  5. Personal statement and other pertinent documents.

Approximately 50 applicants are further considered in an objective manner by overall percentile score. Typically, 30 finalists are invited for a formal interview.

Ten potential resident candidates are interviewed on each of 3 separate and dedicated days between October and December. All resident candidates are interviewed by the department chairman and the program director so that there will be consistency. Six to 8 other voluntary faculty perform 15-minute interviews on each of the 3 days. Urology residents are available throughout the day on each of the 3 days to meet and greet the potential resident candidates and an informal dinner is held at the end of each day so that the residents may get better acquainted with the resident applicants.

The entire faculty is invited to participate in the vetting process and final ranking of the applicants. The urolgy residents are extremely influential in the final decision, as they provide the faculty with written statements about each candidate applicant.

The department of urology at the University of Washington is dedicated to equal opportunity and unbiased diversity in recruiting and retaining residents who are interested not only in urology but scientific investigation and academic leadership.

For most administrative issues, medical students should contact Leo Calipusan, who coordinates medical student and sub-internship rotations in our department.  His contact information is 206.731.6384, leowill@u.washington.edu.  He is located at Harborview Medical Center.

Traditionally, sub-interns spend two weeks at two different hospitals in order to achieve the highest level education and clinical experience possible. Sub-interns will have several assignments which he/she will need to complete before the end of their rotation. First, there are goals and objectives for the rotation. Each sub-intern will need to review these and have a resident or faculty sign and date the objectives as they are completing them. Additionally, there is a test which will need to be completed and returned to the chief resident or Dr. Joyner. This test will help granulate some of their experiences while the sub-intern is with us so as to use the knowledge well into the future. Finally, sub-interns are expected to give a 10-minute presentation on an appropriate subject of their choice near the end of their rotation.  Sub-interns are encouraged to discuss, plan, and schedule their presentation with the chief resident. In order to be considered for an honor grade, a separate 14-question examination should be completed and turned in to the program director.

Depending on the hospital to which the sub-intern is assigned, she/he will need to be attentive in the sometimes tedious orientation process for computer classes and security clearance.  We are required by HIPAA and OSHA to be cognizant of patient confidentiality and safety.
