Notes

[1] There are different ways of counting faculty at the University of Washington. In some university statistics only instructional faculty are counted. In others, only full-time faculty.  Still others count FTE. The most complete accounting is done by the Equal Opportunity Office in their affirmative action reports to the federal government. These reports count all individuals who hold full-time or part-time employment in 27 faculty ranks and categories. These are the data we use in the tables relating to tenure, gender equality, and racial diversity.

The EOO “Academic Personnel” reports can be viewed at: http://www.washington.edu/admin/eoo/Index_AA_Reports.html

We have regrouped the 27 categories into the following: tenured, tenure eligible assistant professors, WOT faculty, Research faculty, Lecturers and Teaching Associates, and Acting Faculty. We have excluded Visiting Faculty.

[2] The national office of AAUP collects salary and tenure data from every research university in the country for its annual salary survey. This is the major survey that all universities use to develop peer comparisons. Unfortunately the data collected is less than complete. The survey asks universities to report only on their full-time, instructional faculty excluding medical schools. This omits the majority of UW faculty. For 2002-03, UW reported on only 2,009 out of the 4,872 faculty members employed. Even with this restricted definition, the table below shows that University of Washington enjoys the tragic distinction of having a larger percentage of its faculty off the tenure track than any other major research university.
