The Center on Disabilities at California State University, Northridge (CSUN)
is pleased to announce seven, one week ATACP sessions for the summer of
2001. The ATACP is more convenient than ever! The ATACP, now in its fifth
year, offers 52 hours of interactive on-line instruction, 40 hours of live
instruction, and an 8 hour certificate project. This configuration meets the
100 hour requirement for a Certificate in Assistive Technology Applications
from CSUN's College of Extended Learning and the Center on Disabilities.
This unique and dynamic in-service training program is designed for
individuals who seek to enhance their professional development and skill
level by earning a Certificate in Assistive Technology Applications. The
ATACP training experience includes electronic and live information sharing
through readings, lectures, demonstrations, discussions, observations, and
presentations on applications of assistive technology. Nationally recognized
speakers and consultants share information across a wide range of assistive
technology (AT) topics.
Acceptance into the program is not guaranteed until participants have been
interviewed by phone or email by an ATACP Trainer and payment in full is
received. We encourage you to make no hotel or travel arrangements until you
have been officially accepted into the program. Participants should register
as early as possible and are considered on a first come, first served basis.

LOCATIONS AND DATES...
ATACP participants are responsible for their own hotel accommodations and
per diem expenses. Please make hotel bookings directly with the hotel (see
ATACP website for hotel contact information). When making reservations,
identify yourself as an ATACP participant to receive the group rate. Please

PROGRAM GOALS AND CERTIFICATE OBJECTIVES
The ATACP is designed to provide a practical approach to the applications of
assistive technology in meeting the needs of individuals with various
disabilities in many settings.
The participant will learn:
* To identify a wide range of applications for assistive technology in the
home, school, work place, and community environments
* About existing and new assistive technologies for people with disabilities
to include, but not limited to augmentative and alternative communication,
environmental controls, seating and positioning, mobility devices, computer
access technology, and technology for people who may have learning,
physical, cognitive and /or sensory disabilities
* To address individual needs through a collaborative team approach
* About resources that are available to support assistive technology devices
and services
* How to address leadership challenges regarding assistive technology
implementation
* How to implement this training into practice upon completion of the
program
PEER NETWORKING
The Center on Disabilities hosts a listserv and has established an "ATACP
Graduate only Website". ATACP participants are encouraged to use this rich
network to raise questions, suggest solutions, and provide resources to
assist ATACP peers and those they serve. The ATACP continues to train and

WHAT ARE THE COURSES?
1. Introduction To Assistive Technologies (on-line introductions and live
presentations)
This introductory workshop will cover the potential of assistive technology
to enhance the lives of people with disabilities. Topics include:
* Consumerism/customer service
* Consumer empowerment
* Informational resources
* Disability etiquette
* Importance of networking
* Trends in Assistive Technology devices and service delivery
* New and emerging technologies
2. Leadership Challenges (on-line)
Identification of leadership issues in Assistive Technology for the 21st
century. Topics include:
* Building personal leadership qualities
* Ethical and professional considerations
* Understanding diversity and cultures
* Incorporating assistive technology training techniques
* Developing and planning personal vision of AT
3. Guiding The Process (on-line Fundamental Assessment Process and live
group exercises)
Developing assistive technology solutions through collaboration within an
interdisciplinary team consisting of the consumer, family members, and
professionals. Collaborative team models will be addressed, including:
* Understanding the "Fundamental Assessment Process (FAP)" model
* Matching people with technology and device features
* Identifying of team members and their roles and responsibilities
* Incorporating a collaborative team
* Building a Team, case study exercises, and the benefits of collaboration
4. Focus On Specialized Areas (review of resources on-line and live
presentations)
Seating, Positioning, Mobility, and Ergonomics - This section will deal with
different types of seating, positioning, mobility, and ergonomic products
and services on the market today. Topics covered: basic principles of
seating from planar to customized systems, fundamental concepts in proper
positioning, positioning for function, the range and scope of the many types
of seating systems and personal mobility products that are commercially
available, and understanding the basics of good ergonomic design and
implementation to inhibit primary and secondary disabilities.
Augmentative and Alternative Communication - This section will be a
comprehensive overview of Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC)
systems, how to integrate them into the lives of people who are speech
impaired, and concentrate on the features of these devices. Well-respected
professionals in AAC will give presentations on input, processing and
output, features of devices, and consumer applications such as computer
access, portability, and environmental control systems. Vendor round-robin
demonstration sessions will be planned.
Devices for People with Sensory Disabilities - This section workshop will
cover the range of equipment used effectively by people with visual
(blindness, visual impairment, low vision) and auditory (deafness and
hearing impairment, hard-of-hearing) impairments. An overview of techniques
and applications will be presented and demonstrations of equipment will be
explored.
Learning Disabilities - This section will address high, low, and
non-technology interventions for persons with learning disabilities. An
overview of technology and its applications will be discussed, along with
demonstrations of various reading, writing, and math tools.
5. Assistive Technology Applications (on-line case studies and live
presentation)
Technology is a means to an end, not the end itself. Participants will
discover how assistive technology can be applied to support a person with a
disability to reach their individual goal(s). A wide range of practical
applications and scope of assistive technology will be addressed:
* Potential of AT to improve education, vocation, and independent living
* Scope of Assistive Technology: from simple to complex
* Home/school/work modifications
* Electronic Aids to Daily Living
* Computer access: input, processing, and output
* Successful technology intervention and services
* Vendor round-robin demonstration sessions
6. Funding And Policy Issues (on-line)
Topics will include:
* Pending and current legislation on assistive technology issues
* Comprehensive look at major funding agencies: Education, Medical
Assistance, and Rehabilitation
* Understanding the funding and policy implications for better access to AT
7. Certificate Project
A practical independent or group project is required in order to earn a
certificate. Participants are encouraged to develop a Certificate Project to
meet the needs of an individual with a disability and/or their organization.
Projects will be developed and approved in consultation with an ATACP
Trainer and other ATACP faculty. A written report or action plan is due
within 90 days after training is completed.

PROGRAM REQUIREMENTS
Participants must have: 1) an email account and 2) access to the Internet as
fifty-two (52) hours of the ATACP are offered in an interactive, on-line
format. On-line instructional materials will be available to participants
approximately six to eight weeks prior to the live workshop. Eligible
participants will be issued a username and password to access these
materials at the time they are accepted into the course on a first come -
first serve basis. The on-line material is to be completed prior to live
instruction in order to receive a certificate.
COST
The cost of the program is $1,995 per person. Cost does not include meals,
hotel, or airfare. Those who successfully complete the program earn a
certificate from the CSUN College of Extended Learning and the option of 10
Continuing Education Units (CEU's). Payment is due at time of registration.
A special 10% discount is offered if three or more persons from the same
organization register on the same purchase order, credit card, or check at
the same time. At the time of acceptance we will process your check, credit
card, or purchase order, and simultaneously issue a username and password
through an acceptance letter. You will not be issued a username and password
until full payment is received.
CANCELLATION / REFUND POLICY
There will be a refund in full if enrollment is cancelled in writing 30 days
or more prior to the start of the ATACP AND the on-line username and
password have not been accepted . Once the on-line username and password
have been accepted , there is no refund and individuals/organizations will
be expected to pay the full amount of the ATACP course.
IMPORTANT INFORMATION ABOUT PURCHASE ORDERS
All purchase orders must contain the following: "It is expressly understood
that there will be a refund in full if enrollment is cancelled 30 days or
more prior to the start of the ATACP and the on-line username and password
have not been accepted via certified mail. It is expressly understood that
once the on-line username and password have been accepted through certified
mail, there is no refund and individuals/organizations will be billed for
the full amount of the ATACP course."
ASHA CEU credits will be available through Rancho Los Amigos National
Rehabilitation Center and is approved by the CEB of the American
Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA) to offer continuing education
activities in speech-language pathology and audiology. This program is
offered for up to 3 CEUs (intermediate level; related area). ASHA approval
of CE Provider status does not imply endorsement of course content, specific
products, or clinical procedures.
An annual ASHA CE Registry Fee ($20) is required to register ASHA CEUs. ASHA
CE Registry fees are paid by the participant directly to the ASHA National
Office. The annual ASHA CE Registry fee allows registration of an unlimited
number of ASHA CEUs for the calendar year. Contact the ASHA CE staff at 800
496-2071, ext. 4219 for CE Registry fee subscription information. ASHA CEUs
for the 40 hours of live instruction will be handled on-site. The Center on
Disabilities fee for ASHA CEUs is $10. Please submit payment with your
registration form.
STEPS TO ACQUIRING A CERTIFICATE
COMPLETELY fill in the application form and attach purchase orders (with
cancellation clause), checks, or other payment information. Be sure to sign
the form!
Send in application form with payment information via regular mail or fax.
Receipt of your application. You will receive an email stating that we have
received your application and to request some possible times to contact you
for an interview.
Interview Process. A trainer will be in touch with you to elaborate on the
training and ask you a few questions. You both will determine whether this
training will be a good "match" for you and your expectations .
Letter of Acceptance. If you are accepted into the program, we will then
issue you a letter of acceptance via certified mail. This letter will
contain information on the program and on-line information you need in order
to gain access to the 52 hours of on-line curriculum. We will process your
payment at the time of your acceptance.

Complete the on-line curriculum BEFORE the live training.
Attend the live ATACP training.
Submit an 8-hour written project within 90 days of the last day of the live
training.
