Burton Announces Special Education Hearing
Wednesday, February 28, 2001 at 1:00 p.m.
Washington, D.C. --- Dan Burton (R-IN), Chairman of the House Government
Reform Committee, will hold an oversight hearing Wednesday to review
compliance of the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA). During
the committee’s ongoing investigation into the dramatic increase in cases of
autism, the panel has learned of numerous problems in existing services for
special education students and their families.
Families across the country have faced serious obstacles in obtaining basic
services and resources required by law, and often have to hire attorneys to
engage in litigation to get access to services. The hearing will examine
whether schools are following Federal laws set out to ensure free and
appropriate education for children with disabilities and highlight ways to
improve services.
