COURSE OVERVIEW: "Augmentative and Alternative Communication: Implementation Strategies." is a three-credit online course examining clinical issues of augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) for children and adults. The web-based lectures and the online discussions will emphasize case studies and practical solutions in AAC, using both high technology and other less complex communication strategies. All students start the course at the same time and participate in the lectures as well as in a stimulating exchange of ideas via e-mail. Students have two outside assignments on specific cases, going through a process that will be useful in their work or life with AAC users. Students will also learn how to use some of the resources in AAC and adaptive technology, available on the Internet and World Wide Web, to stay current with developments in the field after they complete the course.
