Hi, Andrea,
My married couple friends who use a TTY for both have always used only
one line with a dual switch. If the TTY was off, others could use the
regular phone.
The funniest moment for me was to respond to a crisis call from them and
arrive to find two young Mormon missionaries trying to use the TTY for
an emergency call. I showed them how to turn off the TTY, pick up the
receiver and dial 911.
