CMS Seeks Input on the Interagency Wheelchair Work Group (IWWG) Report.
DEADLINE FOR COMMENTS IS FRIDAY, JANUARY 14, 2005. The Centers for Medicare
and Medicaid Services (CMS) has begun a national coverage determination
process to review the agency's wheelchair coverage under Medicare as
announced on December 15, 2004. This effort is part of a three-prong
initiative to make sure patients get the care and equipment they need and
providers are properly paid while curbing abuse according to a news release
issued by CMS (see RESNA Governmental Affairs News in Brief dated December
29, 2004). CMS is seeking comments from the public on the Interagency
Wheelchair Work Group (IWWG) report as well as other recommendations for
clarifying the clinical guidelines for use of these devices. Clinical
studies and other scientific information relevant to the technology is of
particular interest to CMS. There is still time to send in your comments.
RESNA is submitting comments as well as groups such as the ITEM Coalition,
the Clinicians Task Force, United Spinal and other organizations. Please
take this opportunity to get involved in public policy to ensure that
individuals who have a functional mobility need receive the appropriate and
necessary wheeled mobility device. See website below to submit your
comments.
