Dr. Estes’s research focuses on children with developmental disabilities and their families. As part of the UW CPEA (Collaborative Programs of Excellence in Autism), Dr. Estes serves as Associate Director of two large research programs; a multidisciplinary, longitudinal study called the Early Development Study and a study of families with more than one child with an autism spectrum disorder called the Family Study of Autism. These studies aim to increase early recognition of infants and young children at risk for autism, lead to new strategies to prevent or ameliorate autism symptoms, advance research on causes and development of ASD, and i dentify susceptibility genes for autism. Dr. Estes is working to increase understanding of broader phenotype characteristics associated with autism. She is especially interested in the role of the family in creating positive outcomes for children with disabilities.

Dr. Estes is a licensed psychologist in the state of Washington.
