Early
Intervention Consultation
In-Home ABA Program
Consultation services are provided for families who are currently or wish to implement an early intervention, ABA based in-home program for their child with ASD. The ECAC consultant performs an initial evaluation of the child’s skills, provides recommendations for skill acquisition, methods for teaching, training for parents and therapy assistants, and ongoing consultation regarding program progress and skill acquisition. Consultation occurs through meetings within the UW Autism Center clinic and child’s home.
This service is designed for consultants to provide direction to parents at each meeting in order for them to direct the in-home program. Parents hire therapy assistants (TA) to provide the daily, direct 1:1 teaching. The goals for these early intervention services are to 1) improve the child’s language and learning skills in order to gradually transition him/her out of the in-home program into a school by age five and 2) to enable the child to participate in his/her educational program as independently as possible.
This service is viewed as one that transitions the child from an intensive, highly structured, 1:1 learning environment (home) to a more naturalistic, typical, group learning environment (classroom). These intensive early intervention consultation services are provided for children with ASD who are starting services between the ages of 0-5. For children who begin services before age five, services may extend up to age 7 if appropriate.
ABA training is provided for therapy assistants and parents regarding teaching skills and behavior management. Ongoing program consultation is provided which includes recommendations and changes to in-home program based on child’s progress.
Classroom Consultation: ABA Program
This service is designed for children with ASD who are receiving their primary instruction in a public or private preschool or elementary classroom (special education and/or general education). In relationship to a specific student with ASD, specific recommendations are provided regarding individual and small group instructional strategies, staff training, classroom structure and schedule, curriculum development, skill acquisition tracking (data collection), and behavioral consultation. Ongoing consultation, in the form of observations, recommendations (i.e. goals and objectives) for skill acquisition, attendance at IEP team meetings, and training of instructional assistants and teachers is provided. This service is provided for children in preschool through 2nd grade (~age 7). Initial and ongoing reports and updated goals and objectives are provided as needed with recommendations for the school and/or family regarding the student’s educational program. These services are intended to be provided over the course of one year.
