Weekend Walks
There are no Weekend Walks in December. Our January theme will be Ancient Trees. We will look at tree species in the collection that are considered 'living fossils' like the Gingko and the Japanese Umbrella Pine. Visitors will learn about succession of plants on earth and how these few species have survived over millennia.
On Exhibit in the Library: Molly Hashimoto: Nature's Peace
Molly Hashimoto is showing her paintings & prints featuring Western landscapes and birds visiting the Union Bay Natural Area. Original watercolors from the 2014 Nature's Peace calendar are for sale. Also featured are a selection of print techniques, including relief, woodblock and solar plate.
The exhibit runs through December 21. A portion of sales benefit the Miller Library.

Start Your Shopping at the Holiday Art, Craft, and Gift Sale!
Support local artisans at the Holiday Art, Craft, and Gift Sale, running from December 6 through 21 at the Miller Library. Time is Running Out to Join the Trip to Cuba
Time is running out to register for the UW Botanic Gardens trip to Cuba! The deadline to join the February tour is January 2. Director Sarah Reichard will lead the excursion, which includes Havana, the National Botanic Gardens and the Zapata Peninsula. Check out the tour itinerary and register now!

Sign Up for the Master Pruner Series in January
Coming this winter to the University of Washington Botanic Gardens is the Master Pruner Series, held in cooperation with PlantAmnesty. This 12-course series will highlight techniques and tools for quality pruning from a number of professional instructors. The first two lectures happen on January 30. often gets overlooked throughout most of the year, but its vibrant fruit and
evergreen foliage make it a stunning addition to the winter garden,
particularly in containers. The Wintergreen grows via shallow underground
rhizomes and like most plants in the Ericaceae, it prefers acidic soils and
because of its diminutive size, grows best in mostly sunny and exposed sites.READ MORE.
