Weekend Walks
Our tour theme for November 10 is Momiji Gari.
Momiji Gari is the Japanese term for fall color viewing, an important
event in Japanese culture. Our late autumn walks will explore local fall
colors within the variety of Japanese Maples and other trees in the
Arboretum collection. Our last two weekend walks for 2013 (Nov. 17 &
24) will feature our Pinetum collection. This
NW area of the park is home to many conifer species from the US and
around the world. Come on a walk with an experienced guide and learn
more about these tall beauties.

New Signs and Loop Trails at the Washington Park Arboretum
After three years of careful preparation and planning, new way-finding
and interpretive signage are being installed in the
Washington Park Arboretum. So far, more than thirty new signs have been
installed around the park. In addition, two new trails have been marked
out. There is a half-mile “Pinetum Loop” and a one-mile “Lookout Loop”
near the refurbished Gazebo. All of the loop trail interpretation is up
and the next step is the intersection markers. The loops are also
indicated on our brand new trail map. Stop by the Graham Visitors Center
for a map or download one from our website. These additions will make
our beloved urban jewel shine just a little more brightly.

by Dr. John A. Wott, Director Emeritus
This month’s photo, labeled as 1938-39, was taken by Frederick Leissler, landscape architect for the Seattle Parks Department. It shows the grading to create Azalea Way. Leissler
developed the first preliminary sketches in 1934 for a comprehensive plan of the
Arboretum, but the sketches were not accepted.
Leissler
wrote the description on the back of the photo, giving the details, "In
the Grading of 'Azalea Way', over 50,000 cu. yds. of dirt was moved and several
thousand cu. yds. of cow manure and peat moss worked into the soil." (signed Fred Leissler, Asst. Dir.) This was no small feat back in 1938 because work would have been done by hand.
