Do you like good food? Sustainable agriculture? Temporary vegetable tattoos? We hope so! Because that's what the UW Farm's Third Annual Farm to Table Dinner is all about.
It's been an awesome year full of growth, learning, and (of course) veggies for the farm. For us, there's no better way to celebrate the passage of time than with a beautiful meal shared among friends. Join us at 6:30pm, October 27th for a meal prepared by the amazing chefs at Chaco Canyon Organic Cafe with vegetables grown by UW student farmers, along with other local producers.

Fall Professional Seminar - Landscapes on the Edge
The public is becoming more educated about the need for better management of shorelines and steep slopes, resulting in rising public demand for professional services. This is an optimal time to train landscape professionals in the specifics of designing, planning, and installing projects on marine shorelines and other sensitive areas. This program is designed to educate attendees about the vulnerable nature of marine shorelines and provide guidance and instruction on how to better initiate, design, and implement successful landscape and restoration projects on upland buffers, shorelines, steep slopes, and beaches. October Plant Profile: Phacelia tanacetifolia |
Phacelia is a quick-growing, cold- and heat-tolerant flowering plant that is native to the Southwest United States. It is used in agriculture both as cover crop and as an attractant for beneficial insects. As cover crop, Phacelia gets about four feet tall and has deep roots that capture and hold nutrients and increase soil organic matter. At the UW Farm, we mainly use Phacelia as an insectary plant. Its long curvy inflorescences of bell-shaped flowers buzz audibly on sunny summer days, boiling with pollinating and predatory insects that benefit our food crops.
Family: Boraginaceae
Common Name: lacy phacelia, blue tansy or purple tansy.
Location: UW Farm at the Center for Urban Horticulture, Mercer Court Apartments, and McMahon Hall Terrace
Origin: Native to Southwest United States

The Yesler Swamp boardwalk offers a tranquil walk through a restored wetland on the eastern border of the Center for Urban Horticulture. We are happy to announce that the trail to the boardwalk is now officially accessible for all visitors.
We now offer Free Family Weekend Walks at the Washington Park Arboretum! Bring the whole family for a 90-minute themed walk on Saturdays at 1pm. We will stop along the way for games, hands-on activities and learning geared toward children (2-12 years old) and their caregivers. No pre-registration necessary!
The 2016 Sustainable UW Festival is right around the corner. Join the UW community for a variety of fun and environmentally-focused events, including a free tour of our own LEED-certified green building - Merrill Hall - on October 19.
Support the Society for Ecological Restoration-UW's Native Plant Nursery and pick up some great plants for your garden. The fall native plant sale will be on Sunday, November 6, 10am-1pm at the Center for Urban Horticulture.
We have highlighted even more great students and volunteers lately on our blog! Learn about a day in the life of a student farmer, and hear from a student volunteering as a tour guide to share her enthusiasm for plants.
The programs of UW Botanic Gardens are supported in large part by private donations. Please consider supporting our work with a gift.
