R&D Technician/Research Assistant

Job Description:

Under supervision from engineering staff, the incumbent is responsible for functional testing of microfluidic cartridges, test coupons and electro-mechanical systems using industry standard hand tools and techniques. This includes following procedures to perform mechanical assembly, some electrical assembly, calibration of test setups, and hardware and software manipulation. Incumbent must document test results and deviations to test procedures as well as perform data entry and limited troubleshooting. This position will also include responsibility for modification, rework and reassembly of products on an as needed basis.

Perform mechanical test procedures on engineering prototypes (microfluidic cartridges, test coupons and electro-mechanical systems).
Use microscopes, cameras, pneumatic components, pipettes, hand held tools, and precision measuring equipment to perform tests or set up tests.
Follow verbal and written instructions such as work instructions and test protocols.
Document test results on data sheets or enter data into spreadsheets or data bases.
Assist in work instruction or test protocol development.
Use computer driven equipment and tests to complete the test process or to perform tests.

Specific Job Skills:
Ability to use equipment/tools required for mechanical testing and assembly of microfluidic assemblies (microscopes, cameras, pneumatic components, pipettes, hand held tools, and precision measuring equipment).
Ability to read and follow written and verbal work instructions or test protocols
Good mechanical and electrical aptitude.
Good attention to detail and ability and willingness to perform repetitive tasks accurately.
Basic computer skills, literate in Microsoft Office applications.
Flexible, motivated, willing to learn new skills and work well in a team environment.
Ability to perform quality checks (experience in self-inspected work environments a plus.
Good troubleshooting skills with electro-mechanical assemblies.
Ability to lift 50 lbs for a short duration, work standing up for extended periods and bend and stoop occasionally.
Ability to work overtime if needed.
Able to read, write and speak English fluently.


Experience using measurement equipment (e.g., multi-meter, oscilloscope, etc.), and understanding of pneumatic components (e.g., valves, regulators, fittings, etc.).
