Welcome to the Diesel Bus Study Website

The University of Washington Department of Environmental and Occupational Health Sciences is continuing their analysis of data collected to study children's exposure to diesel exhaust while riding school buses and determine if there are associated respiratory health effects.

We have just completed our data collection with participants in the Maple Valley and Seattle school districts and are turning our energy toward organizing, analyzing and understanding our data. We are also working with various groups to share our results with the community.

We are very grateful to our participants and their families, as they have provided us invaluable information to help us to better understand how diesel bus exhaust affects children's respiratory health. We are also indebted to our partners at the Seattle School District, the Tahoma School District, the Tahoma Transportation Department and the First Student, Curtis and Laidlaw (Petermann) bus lots in Seattle.

Thank you for your interest and involvement in our research. If you would like more information, please call 206-543-8087 or email uwbus@u.washington.edu. Please note that because University e-mail messages are all public documents, we cannot guarantee the confidentiality of any information sent by e-mail.

Opacity testing at a Seattle bus base

Opacity:

Opacity measures the concentration of exhaust coming from tailpipes of motor vehicles. During our study, average opacity levels decreased due to the retirement of older buses and the installation of diesel oxidation catalysts (DOCs).
