Overview Disclose and Assign Technology Pre-proposal Proposal TGIF FAQ Award Recipients

The purpose of the Technology Gap Innovation Fund (TGIF) is to further the development of UW innovations with commercial potential. Funding will be awarded on a competitive basis to projects that require additional research or prototype development to make them ready for licensing or for a company start-up. Suitable projects are typically those that are beyond the basic research stage and beyond the interest of most federal funding agencies. Proposals must demonstrate a high probability of increasing the commercial opportunities for UW innovations.

Grants of up to $50,000 (no indirect costs will apply) will be awarded to researchers for projects up to 12 months in duration.

This is a three step process:

1. Disclosure and Assignment of Technology
2. Submission of 2-page Pre-proposal
3. Submission of Full Proposal - upon acceptance of pre-proposal only

Eligibility

• A proposal can be submitted by a UW Principal Investigator (PI).
• UW managed technology.
• A PI may have only one TGIF project funded at any one time and have at least one year time period since completion of most recent TGIF project.
• A PI cannot have a simultaneous Royalty Research Fund award for the same project.
• A PI may submit only one pre-proposal as PI or Co-PI per round.

Fund Sponsors

The Technology Gap Innovation Fund is a Royalty Research Fund program. It is supported by royalty and licensing income generated by UW's technology transfer activities. It is also supported by an ongoing gift from the Washington Research Foundation.

When licensing a technology that is included in the TGIF proposal, the University will seek additional licensing revenue that is equal to the TGIF grant award amount.  Such funds will be used by the University to reimburse the TGIF program so that future grants can be awarded.  The University will reimburse the TGIF program the amount of the grant award from any financial consideration it receives from licensing or otherwise transferring rights to a third party from technology that is included in this TGIF proposal.

Funding Available

Funding is available in June for proposals submitted for the Spring Round and in January for proposals submitted in the Fall Round.
