Facilitating Tribal Regulation of Research

Tribal Regulation of Research

A core principle of Partnerships for Native Health is the belief that tribal governments have the authority to regulate research occurring within their lands and with their members. To facilitate strong tribal regulation of research, the University of Washington Native American Law Center and the Partnerships for Native Health are developing legal tools for Tribes to fully regulate research. These legal documents include model tribal health research codes ranging from implementing simple research approval processes to creation of tribal research regulatory agencies. Also included in this legal toolkit are model memorandums of understanding (MOUs) between tribes and health researchers.
