Tribal Research Consultation Service
An important service the Tribal Community Outreach and Translation Core of the Institute for Translational Health Sciences is providing a resource for tribal officials with questions about ongoing or proposed research in their community. This service allows for tribal officials or potential research subjects to ask a question about the research and the Tribal CORT will attempt to find a scientist specialized in the particular area to answer the question. This allows consultation with specialists who are not involved in the proposed or ongoing research and thus have no conflict of interest in their answer. Examples of areas of expertise include
Research Ethics: The Department of Bioethics and the Humanities at the University of Washington are important participants in the Institute for Translational Health Sciences' Regulatory Core. The DBH has particular expertise in the ethics of research among American Indian and Alaska Native Communities. The DBH also has expertise in the area of research ethics in genetic research and also provides resources for this area as well.
Institutional Review Board: The University of Washington's Institutional Review Board reviews all research projects to determine their potential impact to people who agree to take part in the research. The University of Washington's IRB has specialized rules for research projects among Amercan Indians and Alaska Native Communities. The UW IRB is available to answer specific questions about the IRB approval process as well as tribal community ability to participate in review of projects intended for their communities.
Legal Issues: The Native American Law Center at the University of Washington Law School works with the Tribal Community Outreach in Research Translation Core of the Institute for Translational Health Sciences. The UW NALC works with tribes to develop their tribal codes and policies regulating research which is proposed for their communities. The UW NALC is also available to consult with tribal officials or tribal members who are considering participating in a research project in their communities.
Medical Issues: The Center for Clinical and Epidemiological Research is also a key component to the Tribal Community Outreach in Research Translation Core for the Institute for Translational Health Sciences. The UW CCER is home for the Partnerships for Native Health which works on medical research within tribal communities, focusing on health problems American Indians and Alaska Natives face in areas such as cancer, cardiovascular and cerebrovascular disease. The UW CCER is available to consult with tribal officals or tribal members who are considering participating in a research project in their communities.
Specific Research Topics: The University of Washington is one of the largest research institutions in the world. If tribal officials or tribal members who are considering participating in a research project in their communities have questions about the topic of a specific area of research, the Tribal Community Outreach in Research Translation Core of the Institute for Translational Health Sciences will attempt to find a scientist with special expertise in the research topic area. Examples of common health research topics include obesity, cardiovascular disease, cancer, fetal alcohol spectrum disorder, exercise, nutrition, brain function, and a huge number of other potential research topics.
Non-University of Washington Expertise: If the tribal community or tribal members who are considering participating in a research project in their communities are concerned wiht a University of Washington researcher and wishes to consult with specialists outside of the University of Washington, the ITHS will attempt to find someone who is able to consult from an outside institution. These instiutions may include University of Arizona, University of Colorado at Denver, John Hopkins University, Cornell University, Boston College, Oregon Health Sciences University, University of New Mexico, University of Minnesota, and various other health institutions.
