The challenge of eliminating the achievement gap in the face of a broader
social, political, cultural and economic context which is literally "hard wired"
against equity, poses an enormous leadership challenge for all school leaders.
This challenge is particularly vexing for district level leaders. While there
is some evidence around the country of individual schools that are closing the
achievement gap, there is little evidence to suggest that school systems have
been able to sufficiently scale up reform efforts to create the conditions necessary
for each and every school within the system to eliminate the achievement gap.
However the Center for Educational Leadership operates from the unwavering belief
that the achievement gap can be closed at a systems level by building of leadership
capacity, (specifically will and savvy) of systems-level leaders.
The District Leaders Seminar Series is designed for systems level leaders, e.g., superintendents and central office leaders who are working hard toward the elimination of the achievement gap. The purpose of this program is threefold:
- To provide a forum where district leaders can hear from and interact with
leading practitioners and scholars who are working actively toward the elimination
of the achievement gap.
- To provide a forum for collegial support where district leaders can integrate
new information, learn from each other, and support each other in their collective
quest to eliminate the achievement gap.
- To provide a forum where district leaders can test their assumptions and
leadership strategies for closing the achievement gap among nationally recognized
practitioners and scholars.
