School Leadership Program


Leading for Instructional Improvement

Eliminating the achievement gap requires high-quality teaching for every student. High-quality teaching requires leaders who know what good instruction looks like.

Utilizing CEL’s researched-based 5 Dimensions of Teaching and Learning (5D), this five-day program will develop leaders’ capacity to:

■ Analyze classroom instruction to support quality teaching
■ Create a common vision around powerful instruction for a school and/or district
■ Establish leadership action based on evidence of student learning

Day One: October 23, 2008
8:00 a.m. - 3:00 p.m.


Learn about CEL’s 5 Dimensions of Teaching and Learning:

Purpose
Student Engagement
Curriculum and Pedagogy
Assessment of Student Learning
Classroom Environment and Culture


Practice using each Dimension as a lens for analyzing classroom practice
Consider implications for supporting teacher development and student achievement

Day Two-Four: November, January, February
(Specific dates confirmed at first session)


Guided walkthroughs:

□ Learn with elementary and secondary colleagues (eight-participant cohorts arranged by level)
□ Gather evidence of teacher practice and student learning using 5D tools
□ Develop collective understanding of classroom instruction
□ Analyze data to identify strengths and needs

Day Five: March 19, 2009
8:00 a.m. - 3:00 p.m.


Leadership action:

□ Review learning for the year
□ Reflect on implications for leadership action
□ Develop school- and/or district-specific plan of action
□ Extend learning through online opportunities

Cost
$695 per participant, 30 clock hours included
University of Washington graduate credit available
for an additional credit fee

Important Note
Course offering is dependent upon:
1. Minimum enrollment of 16 participants--each to be grouped in an eight-participant cohort by elementary or secondary level.
2. Willingness for participants to host guided walkthroughs in their respective school and/or district sites.
