Summer Leadership Institute
Background & Purpose
The Center for Educational Leadership exists to eliminate the achievement
gap that continues to divide our nation's children along the lines of race and
class. The Center believes the nexus for the elimination of the achievement
gap lies in the development of leadership capacity, specifically, the leadership
necessary to improve the quality of instruction in every school, and in every
classroom.
The Center supports school and district leaders committed to the elimination
of the achievement gap through a variety of programs and customized services
designed with these principles in mind:
- You can't lead what you don't know; in order to improve the quality of
instruction, leaders need to know what good instruction looks like.
- Knowledge alone is insufficient; leaders must combine their increased knowledge
with the will to address deeply embedded inequities.
- Will cannot be taught, but it can be nurtured.
- Addressing historical, and deeply embedded, inequities put leaders at risk.
- It is easier to take risks when there is someone to support you and give
you evidence that you are on the right track.
The Summer Leadership Institute is an intense six day experience designed to
increase participants' understanding, knowledge and skills while deepening their
will to act on behalf of our most disadvantaged students. The institute provides
an opportunity for meaningful conversations with the Center for Educational
Leadership faculty and guest presenters. The institute is designed for both
building-based and district-based teams comprised of school administrators,
teacher leaders, superintendents, assistant superintendents, and other district
level administrators. Participants are welcome from urban, suburban and rural
districts.
