Summer Writing Institute
August 4-8, 2008
In order to create proficient writers who know how to communicate clearly and coherently, students need to be provided authentic and meaningful learning opportunities.

Learn how to develop students' writing skills during this week-long institute created for K-12 teachers, coaches, and administrators. Throughout the institute, participants will receive explicit writing process instruction created for K-2, 3-5, 6-8, and 9-12 grade level groups. |
Introductory level (participants who are new to the writing process)
During the course of the week, participants will:
■ Become immersed in the writing process
■ Learn a variety of approaches including interactive and shared writing
■ Create a writing process classroom
■ Utilize a writer's folder, notebook and mentor texts to facilitate student learning
■ Learn how to assess student writing for the development of appropriate instruction
■ Address state standards in writing lessons

Experienced level (participants who wish to broaden their knowledge and repertoire of strategies)
Since this session builds upon previous instruction, participants are required to bring student work and their own writer's notebook or samples of their own writing.
During the course of the week, participants will:
■ Deepen their understanding and practice of approaches to teach writing, including writer's workshop
■ Learn how to confer with students to enhance their level of writing work
■ Assess their own students' writing work for the development of lessons designed to improve the quality of writing |
