Writing Programs

Summer Writing Institute

August 4-8, 2008

In order to create proficient writers who know how to communicate clearly and coherently, students need to be provided authentic and meaningful learning opportunities.

Learn how to develop students' writing skills during this week-long institute created for K-12 teachers, coaches, and administrators. Throughout the institute, participants will receive explicit writing process instruction created for K-2, 3-5, 6-8, and 9-12 grade level groups.

Introductory level (participants who are new to the writing process)

During the course of the week, participants will:

Become immersed in the writing process
Learn a variety of approaches including interactive and shared writing
Create a writing process classroom
Utilize a writer's folder, notebook and mentor texts to facilitate student learning
Learn how to assess student writing for the development of appropriate instruction
Address state standards in writing lessons

Experienced level (participants who wish to broaden their knowledge and repertoire of strategies)

Since this session builds upon previous instruction, participants are required to bring student work and their own writer's notebook or samples of their own writing.

During the course of the week, participants will:

Deepen their understanding and practice of approaches to teach writing, including writer's workshop
Learn how to confer with students to enhance their level of writing work
Assess their own students' writing work for the development of lessons designed to improve the quality of writing

Comments from the participants wh2007 Summer Writing Instituteo attended 2007 Institute:

"This has been the most transformational experience regarding writing.  I would hope to have additional teachers attend from our building."

"As an administrator, I would love to send my entire staff.  Writing process is deep work!  We are all writers – we need to expect the same from our students."

"This hit the needs in our building to see how to support students at varying writing levels.  I wish more people from my staff would have been able to attend."
