Undergraduate Student Assistantship

The Simpson Center for the Humanities seeks a Student Assistant to (1) provide support to the Program Manager, especially concerning Center events and publicity; (2) assist in the general duties and maintenance of the Simpson Center office; and (3) provide staffing support at quarterly Katz Lectures.

Duties and responsibilities include:

PUBLICITY
Assist Program Manager with various publicity support:

  • Create template-based flyers and programs for Center events
  • Format and edit flyers for grammar, style, and design
  • Assist with production and distribution of flyers: delivering stationery to copy center, managing mailing lists, making labels, distributing flyers through campus and off-campus mail, posting flyers in central campus locations
  • Work cooperatively with other student assistant(s) and Program Manager to ensure that publicity deadlines are met
  • Compile event information for the Center’s online calendar
  • Maintain Simpson Center stationery inventory and supplies
  • Maintain Simpson Center publicity archive
  • Keep publicity bulletin boards up to date in Simpson Center and Communications 226

OFFICE WORK & MAINTENANCE
Assist Simpson Center staff by helping with various office tasks including but not limited to the following:

  • Make copies, help with filing, and handle mailings and mail pickup
  • Provide front desk reception coverage (answering phones, greeting visitors)
  • Maintain video library and photography log and files
  • Organize and track office supplies
  • Assist in maintaining Simpson Center space (water plants, put dishes away, keep public spaces neat, etc.)
  • Ensure that Simpson Center and classroom spaces are tidy in preparation for Simpson Center events
  • Assist with receptions (generally this involves preparation and/or cleanup of space, but may occasionally involve food shopping)
  • Provide event support, including occasional evening hours (1x/quarter for Katz Lectures)
  • Run errands (e.g., to Schmitz Hall, Suzzallo Library, and Ave Copy)

Required Qualifications:

  • Must be a student enrolled for at least 6 credits at the UW Seattle Campus
  • Ability to work independently and exercise good judgment and initiative
  • Ability to work cooperatively with other students and with Simpson Center staff
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Strong organizational skills
  • Experience with standard office equipment such as printers, copiers, fax machines, and scanners
  • Basic knowledge of software including Word, Excel, Access, Publisher, and Adobe Acrobat

Desired Qualifications:

  • Editing and proofreading ability, with excellent attention to detail
  • Interest in the humanities and the mission of the Simpson Center
  • Interest in web-based communication technologies and/or the skills to support the Simpson Center’s online and web communications applications (Dreamweaver, SharePoint)

The Program Assistant is a part-time position at 10-18 hours per week. Hours are negotiated on a quarterly basis depending on the Program Assistant’s class schedule and the Simpson Center’s needs. The compensation range is $8.55-$12/hour depending on experience, with the upper range reserved for students with demonstrably higher technical and/or design skills.
