Student Program Assistant

Start Date: Autumn Quarter 2008

The Simpson Center for the Humanities seeks a student Program Assistant to

  • provide support to the Program Manager, especially concerning Center events and publicity
  • assist in the general duties and maintenance of the Simpson Center office.

Duties and responsibilities include:

Publicity
Assist Program Manager with various publicity support:

  • Create template-based flyers and programs for Center events
  • Format and edit flyers (print and electronic) for grammar, style, and layout
  • Oversee production and distribution of flyers by delivering stationery to Copy Center, managing mailing lists, making labels, and distributing flyers through campus and off-campus mail
  • Work cooperatively with other student assistant(s) and Program Manager to ensure that publicity deadlines are met
  • Compile event information for the Center's online calendar
  • Maintain Simpson Center stationery supplies
  • Maintain binder and archive of all Simpson Center publicity
  • Keep publicity bulletin boards up to date in Simpson Center and Communications 226

Office Work & Maintenance
Assist Simpson Center staff by helping with various office tasks including:

  • Make copies, help with filing, and handle mailings and mail pickup
  • Provide front desk reception coverage (answering phones, greeting visitors)
  • Maintain video library and photography log and files
  • Organize and track office supplies
  • Assist in maintaining Simpson Center space (water plants, put dishes away, keep public spaces neat, etc.)
  • Ensure that Simpson Center and classroom spaces are tidy in preparation for Simpson Center events
  • Assist with receptions (food shopping, preparation, and/or cleanup)
  • Provide event support, including occasional evening hours
  • Run occasional errands (e.g., to Schmitz Hall, Suzzallo Library, and Ave Copy)

Required Qualifications

  • Must be a student enrolled for at least 6 credits at the UW Seattle Campus
  • Ability to work independently and exercise good judgment and initiative
  • Ability to work cooperatively with other students and with Simpson Center staff
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Strong organizational skills

Desired Qualifications
  • Experience with standard office equipment such as printers, copiers, fax machines, and scanners
  • Basic knowledge of software including Word, Excel, Access, Publisher, and Adobe Acrobat
  • Editing and proofreading ability, with excellent attention to detail
  • Interest in the humanities and the mission of the Simpson Center

The Program Assistant is a part-time position with 10-18 hours per week. Hours are negotiated on a quarterly basis depending on the Program Assistant's schedule and the Simpson Center's needs. The compensation range is $9-$12/hour depending on experience.
