Simpson Center Funding Opportunities
The Simpson Center for the Humanities provides financial and administrative support for crossdisciplinary research, teaching, and engagement projects. Simpson Center funding sponsors a wide range of activities, including:
- fellowships for UW faculty and doctoral students
- cross-departmental research groups
- scholarly conferences and symposia
- community-engaged collaborations
Procedures and timetables for seeking support vary by category. Funding rounds are administered twice annually, in Fall and Spring. Grant applications are reviewed and selected for support by the Simpson Center Executive Board. Proposed projects should be led by UW faculty and/or graduate students, require $1,000 or more in funding, and be planned for the subsequent academic year.

Fellowship Grants Fellowship Grants for the Society of Scholars are reviewed in the Fall Round only. All other fellowships are called for under Programs & Special Initiatives, as available. |
|
Collaborative Projects This category includes Collaboration Studio Grants (Fall rounds only), as well as interdisciplinary and community-based collaborations at all scales, colloquia and conferences. |
|
Lecturer Nominations Lecturer nominations—for UW and visiting Katz Distinguished Lecturers and Professorships in the Humanities—are generally solicited and reviewed as part of the Fall funding rounds. |
|
Programs and Special Initiatives Programs & Special Initiatives may issue calls for proposals that are posted apart from the regular Fall and Spring funding rounds and administered by special committees. |
|
Co-Sponsored Events Co-sponsored Events that are interdepartmental may request small, discretionary grants (max. $500) to support opportunities such as visiting lecturers and conferences. Applications are accepted throughout the year and do not go through Executive Board review. |
