The Simpson Center invites individual and collaborative project proposals from UW faculty and graduate students engaged in humanistic inquiry. The Simpson Center conceives of humanistic inquiy broadly, in its connections and contributions to the arts, social sciences, sciences, and professions. Proposals are evaluated by members of the Simpson Center Executive Board in fall and in spring for support for the subsequent academic year. See specific categories for guidelines.

Symposia, Colloquia, and Conferences

The Simpson Center invites proposals for the support of crossdisciplinary and interdisciplinary symposia, colloquia, and conferences. It is hoped that at least one large international research conference will be supported each year, preferably scheduled for either fall or spring quarter, on a topic of interest to scholars across two or more disciplines. Proposals to request support for a meeting of a regional, national, or international scholarly association at the University of Washington will be considered but are not a first priority for funding. The Executive Board encourages including a humanities seminar or course—in particular at the graduate level—during the quarter(s) that will precede or coincide with a research conference or a colloquium series.

Application

Submit the following as one document:

  1. A proposal that explains the significance of the subject of the conference or colloquium series, the activities to be funded (including when and where they will take place), participating persons or organizations, audience, a possible promotion plan, and anticipated results (such as a publication).

  2. A budget that details anticipated expenses such as salaries, stipends or honoraria, travel, accommodations, promotional materials such as posters or postcards, hospitality, and extraordinary office or instructional supplies, printing, copying, postage costs, and facilities rentals.

  3. Curriculum vita(e) for the organizer(s) (maximum five pages per person).

Checklist

  • Proposal cover sheet (print out and submit to your departmental chair and administrator/fiscal specialist for signatures, return signed hard copy to the Simpson Center)
(PDF and Word versions available shortly)

  • Complete a brief Catalyst survey. This contains the same information as the paper cover sheet: www.simpsoncenter.org/coversheet
