Faculty Research Fellowships (Society of Scholars)
UW faculty are invited to apply for Simpson Center Research Fellowships to pursue their individual research and to participate in the biweekly meetings of the fellows throughout the academic year. Awards will be based on the scholarly merit of the individual applications. Since one of the main purposes of this fellowship program is to enable faculty and graduate students to discuss their work with colleagues in other departments, scholars whose research is likely to contribute to intellectual exchange among a diverse group of colleagues and who are committed to collegial dialogue are especially encouraged to apply. This fellowship is not appropriate for those whose projects require periods of time spent away from the University during the fellowship year.
Faculty at the ranks of assistant professor, associate professor, and professor are eligible to submit proposals; assistant professors must have served as active faculty for at least one year prior to their application. We expect to make eight awards to faculty, who receive release time from teaching for two courses (preferably in a single quarter) to devote themselves to their research. The Simpson Center will furnish replacement costs to the home department for two graduate students up to the level of Predoc. Teaching Assoc. II who teach one course each (or one graduate student who teaches two courses); these funds include benefits and tuition waivers. Faculty who have previously held Simpson Center Fellowships are eligible to apply again after a period of three years.
We refer applicants to the National Endowment for the Humanities’ guidelines for the preparation of the project narrative. Please note: all faculty who are awarded fellowships will be expected to submit an application for a fellowship to a national agency or foundation (such as NEH, ACLS, or the Guggenheim Foundation) or a residency site (such as the National Humanities Center) either in the fellowship year or the year thereafter.
Application
- Submit a proposal (limited to 1,750 words or approximately six double-spaced pages n.b. not 500 words as previously circulated) that describes the research project, addressing the following points in language clear to non-specialists in the field: the project’s objectives, significance, methodology, contribution to the scholarship and debates in the field, and timeline (what has been previously accomplished and what is expected to be accomplished during the year). Also include a bibliography consisting of both primary and secondary sources directly related to the project (limited to 500 words).
- Submit a curriculum vita (maximum five pages) with the project description.
- Request an electronic letter of support from a colleague knowledgeable about the field of research. The letter should be mailed electronically to Renee DeLong at red2@u.washington.edu or sent in hard copy to the Simpson Center.
