Solomon Katz Distinguished Lectureship in the Humanities

We invite nominations for the Katz Distinguished Lectureships in the Humanities for 2009-2010. Typically, the Solomon Katz Endowment in the Humanities supports three lectures each academic year—one by a member of the UW faculty, one by a visiting scholar who is in residence at UW for a week, and one by a visiting scholar, the Solomon Katz Professor, who is in residence at the UW for an entire quarter and teaches a quarter-long graduate seminar. We invite nominations for the UW Katz Lectureship, as well as the visiting Katz Lectureships and the quarter-long Professorship.

The nominee should have excellent scholarly credentials and speaking abilities. The lectures are intended to appeal to a broad audience—faculty, students, and the general public. Amplitude of thought and interests of a crossdisciplinary nature are especially desirable. That the visiting scholars will be able to contribute to ongoing programs and emerging areas at the graduate level is also desirable. We encourage nominations of distinguished figures from non-western countries. In the past, visiting Katz Lecturers have taught week-long micro-seminars that have been extremely successful.

To nominate, please submit the name and position of your nominee, an explanation of his or her contributions and the significance of his or her work, letter(s) of support from co-sponsoring departments(s), and a biographical sketch or c.v. of the nominee.

Those nominating speakers for Katz professor or lecturer will be expected to participate in the Katz visit as faculty hosts, should the nomination be approved and subsequent invitation accepted. The Simpson Center will seek help from faculty hosts in arranging dinners and lunches with the visiting speaker.
