UW Graduate Student Explores Seattle’s Dumpster-Diving Culture
The research of David Giles, UW graduate student in anthropology and a Society of Scholars fellow at the Simpson Center, was recently highlighted in the Seattle Times. For his doctoral thesis, Giles is examining the economics of food consumption and how cultural assumptions of what is appetizing lead to the unnecessary disposal of surplus, edible food. To do so, he explores Seattle’s Dumpster-diving culture to gain a better understanding of food that is wasted.
He not only researches Dumpster-diving, but he practices it as well. Seattle Times reporter Katherine Long recently covered Giles' Dumpster-diving and research. Read her complete story.
