2013-14 Society of Scholars Fellowships Awarded

Fourteen UW scholars have been selected to participate in the Society of Scholars fellowship program for the 2013-14 academic year. Facilitated by the Simpson Center, the Society of Scholars is an intellectual community in which scholars of diverse generations, academic ranks, and departmental affiliations contribute to and learn from one another’s work.

The Simpson Center’s Executive Board has awarded support to select UW scholars and projects for 2013-2014 year. Simpson Center funding sponsors a wide range of activities, including fellowships for UW faculty and doctoral students, cross-departmental research groups, scholarly conferences, and community-engaged collaborations. Recipients of awards given in this year’s Fall and Spring funding rounds include:

"New Books in Print" Returns this Winter with Jessica Burstein and Eric Ames

The “New Books in Print” series, hosted by the Simpson Center, provides UW scholars an opportunity to discuss their recently published books. Book talks by faculty members Jessica Burstein (English) and Eric Ames (Germanics) will take place during Winter Quarter, so mark your calendars!

Fall Funding Round Application Deadline is November 14, 2012

The Simpson Center is currently accepting applications for Society of Scholars research fellowships, Collaboration Studio Grants, conferences and collaborative projects of all scales, as well as nominations for Katz lecturers and Center for the Study of the Pacific Northwest travel grants for the 2013-2014 academic year. The deadline is November 14, 2012.

Phi Beta Kappa Elects Three UW Faculty as Senators

Three University of Washington faculty have been elected as senators of the national Phi Beta Kappa Society, the nation’s oldest academic honor society, at the group’s triennial council meeting in Palm Beach, Fla. Serving six-year terms are Simpson Center Director Kathleen Woodward; Zev Handel, associate professor ofAsian Languages & Literature and a 2011-12 Society of Scholars fellow; and Mary-Claire King, professor of Genome Sciences.
