Moving Image Research Group

Year of Funding:
2012/2013

Affiliated with the Moving Images Research Group (MIRG), MIRG-GIG aims to bring together graduate students from diverse departments interested in the study of moving images, including film, television, or new media. While some members focus specifically on film and media studies, others approach film from a historical or area studies perspective and may intend to use film as a pedagogical tool.

Our events invite students to screen and discuss films, read current scholarship, and workshop papers in progress. The linked faculty group brings a speaker to campus every quarter, which provides the GIG with an opportunity to hold associated events. We also attend various screenings around Seattle and discuss the films seen. Last year’s outings included seeing Pina with director Wim Wenders in attendance and meeting with Austrian documentarian Michael Glawogger after seeing his series of films at the Northwest Film Forum.

We welcome new graduate student members from any department.
