Some notes

  • Internships are an optional part of the curriculum of the UW CLMA program. Although we strongly encourage you to apply for one or more internships, internships cannot be guaranteed.

  • You are not required to seek internships from only these companies. If you know of other interesting opportunities, by all means pursue them.

  • RAships within other departments can serve an internship role. Feel free to network with researchers in CSE and related departments.

  • Your internship should result in work relevant to your thesis. Thus, the work you do should be relevant to your research agenda, and must be significant enough to be the topic of a thesis.

  • Be aware, Intellectual Property (IP) issues can affect what work you do or what work you can report in your thesis. Some firms have clear vetting procedures for this. It's important that you clarify in advance what IP issues are relevant to whatever project you'll be working on. You don't want to be precluded from reporting the work you do in your thesis!

  • What's required for your CLMA is a thesis, not an internship. You can do a thesis without an internship, and an internship topic does not have to be related to your thesis topic (although we strongly encourage you to combine them, more for your sanity than anything!).

  • The Center for Career Services on campus should have useful information about writing resumes, interviewing, negotiating salary, etc.
