Centennial Membership Drive
The University of Washington is quickly approaching its 100th Birthday! Last year we launched a three-year membership drive to celebrate our longevity and presence on campus that will culminate in a huge celebration in November 2009. 60 new members joined the Club last year and in the second year of membership drive our goal is to gain 75 new members.
Along the way, we’ll have promotions and specials focused on building membership and celebrating our history as part of the university community.
We are also continuing our referral program. Bring in a friend or a colleague to join the club and receive a coupon for the lounge, introduce two or more people to the club and receive a coupon for different club events.
Every Quarter The Club is hosting a UW Club Orientation. Check our website for dates and times. Bring a friend, meet other members and enjoy a luncheon hosted by the club.
Did you know … ?
- The original club, incorporated in 1909, was originally part of the Alaska Yukon Pacific Exposition.
- During the exposition, the building was known as the “Hoo Hoo Club,” as part of the Forestry Exhibit. Some of the original building’s Douglas fir is preserved as a wall in the UW Club lounge.
- In 1927, female faculty were given permission to meet in the old faculty club (until being torn down in 1959), but they were NOT permitted to use the main entrance; they had to use a side door.
- In 1959, the original building was torn down. The current building, designed by Paul Hayden Kirk and Victor Steinbrueck, has received design awards as an excellent example of the Northwest interpretation of the international style of architecture.
- UW Housing and Food Service provided all of the food service for the club until October 1992 when the club installed a kitchen.
Along with the Centennial Membership Drive, we have formed an historical committee to help plan for the Centennial Celebration and to record the club’s history.
Reminisce and Share
Should you have a story, an anecdote, or a special memory of the club that you want to share, please e-mail us or mail it to the club. We will be collecting these reminiscences to post in our newsletter and on our Web site.
