3rd Annual Washington Healthy Schools Summit
May 28-29, 2009 - Seatac, WA
The Healthy Schools Summit provided tools and information for engaging the whole child through healthy schools—where students and staff are supported, motivated and students graduate on time. Donna Johnson and Anne Lund presented "Policy Legislation and Nutrition: What Works to Improve Student Health in Washington?" (Slides - pdf). Donna Johnson also co-presented "King County Board of Health Advocates for Healthy School Nutrition" (Slides - pdf) with Donna Oberg from Public Health Seattle & King County.

Nutrition in the Womb Course
April 6-7, 2009
This course provided an opportunity public health and healthcare professionals to learn how improving the diets of girls and young women will reduce the burden of chronic disease in the next generation. Achieve Better Health with Nutrient Rich Foods Symposium

15th Annual Washington State Joint Conference on Health
October 8, 2008 - Yakima, WA
Mary Podrabsky MPH, RD was a co-presenter for "Coordinated School......What?" The session introduced a model that re-frames Coordinated School Health in a way that educators embrace and that enhances team efforts toward achieving a truly coordinated, healthy learning environment. Evidence of the success in improving health and academic outcomes, including the narrowing of the achievement gap, was shared, along with information on Healthy Schools, Successful Students. National Meeting on Food Consumer Behavior

ILSI Australasia has organized a meeting to understand the role labeling plays in impacting consumer behavior towards healthy choices and how to obtain reliable data about the impact of communication on consumer behavior. This conference was organized by the Australian Public Health Nutrition Academic Collaboration (APHNAC) in association with SA Health and the Public Health Association of Australia. Population Health Congress 2008: A Global World - Practical Action for Health & Well-being

Washington Smart Screen Time Summit
May 18, 2007 - Seattle, WA
Organized by the Centers for Public Health Nutrition/Exploratory Center for Obesity Research at the University of Washington and the Washington State Department of Health. The goals of this meeting were to provide up-to-date information about the impact of screen time (e.g., TV, videos, DVD's, video games) in childhood and to review existing screen reduction programs. We also gathered input from participants that will lead to a comprehensive and coordinated Washington plan for promoting smart screen use. The target audience for this summit was health professionals, educators, public health practitioners, and childcare providers, from throughout Washington State. Featured speakers included Dimitri Christakis, MD, MPH, Director of the UW Child Health Institute, and Barbara Brock, PhD, Professor of Recreation Management, Eastern Washington University.

EGEA IV: The Role of Fruit and Vegetables in the Fight Against Obesity

Conference organized by Aprifel with the support of DG SANCO and the EU platform for Diet, physical activity and health. CPHN Director, Adam Drewnowski, PhD, presented and chaired discussions on "The real cost of obesity," "Barriers to Reaching the Recommendations for F&V, in the Context of Obesity Prevention," and "Possible Public Initiatives to Counter these Barriers."

Poverty and Obesity: Disparities in Diet and Health
March 2, 2007- Seattle WA
At this one-day conference researchers, economists, funders, and policymakers addressed the relationship between poverty and economic and physical access to healthy foods. We believe this a major issue of local, national, and global health concern. The conference was organized by Adam Drewnowski, PhD, Professor of Epidemiology and ECOR Director, and Roland Sturm, PhD, Senior Economist at the Rand Corporation. The audience included researchers, public health practitioners, funders, policymakers, and community members.

California Childhood Obesity Conference: Protecting the Future of our Children
January 23-26, 2007 - Anaheim, CA
Building on previous year’s conferences, the 2007 California Childhood Obesity Conference increased public awareness of prevention policies and efforts that support healthy eating and physical activity environments with a focus on strategies that meet the needs of high-risk and low income communities. Donna Johnson presented on two projects, Active Bodies Active Minds and Promoting Family Meals in WIC.

McGill Integrative Health Challenge Think Tank: Forging a Societal Action plan in Preventing Childhood Obesity Around the World- Oct 26-27, 2006
Montreal - CPHN Director, Adam Drewnowski participated in the Think Tank which convened leading academics, professionals, and decision- and policy-makers from the domains of health, education, agriculture and food, leisure and sports, urban planning, media, finance, management, law, politics and economy to develop a bolder approach to the prevention of childhood obesity around the world. Participants forged the draft version of a societal plan for childhood obesity prevention currently in the making the by the Global Prevention Alliance, a partnership among five international medical associations that works in close collaboration with the World Health Organization.

Fourth King County Overweight Prevention Initiative Forum: Momentum!
May 12, 2006
Des Moines, WA - This meeting was part of an ongoing countywide effort to bring together community organizations, government agencies, and academic researchers to develop innovative and effective strategies for preventing and controlling overweight and obesity in our region. The meeting was sponsored by the King County Board of Health, Public Health-Seattle & King County, and the University of Washington Exploratory Center for Obesity Research (ECOR) and Center for Public Health Nutrition. James Sallis, PhD, from San Diego State State University spoke about Policies to Promote Evidence-Based Physical Activity Interventions.

Breastfeeding Help Beyond the Hospital Stay - May 11, 2006
Seattle, WA - This conference co-sponsored by Great Starts: Birth and Family Education (formerly CEAS) and Public Health Seattle-King County offered community healthcare professionals an opportunity to learn common breastfeeding challenges experienced by mothers after leaving the hospital. Donna Johnson presented "Making it Work @ Work: Factors that Make a Difference for Breastfeeding Families.

Washington State Dietetic Association Conference -Nutrition the Road Ahead: Paving the Way - April 23-25, 2006
Spokane, WA - Donna Johnson, PhD, RD and Jessica Donze Black, MPH, RD presented “Navigating the Roads to Solving the Obesity Crisis” and discussed what works in obesity prevention: successful campaigns, programs, interventions, individual and group counseling, policy and advocacy.
