15th Annual Washington State Joint Conference on Health
Yakima, Wa - Join us at the Joint Conference for the presentation, "Coordinated School......What?" on Wednesday, October 8th from 10:00-11:30 a.m. This session will introduce a model that re-frames Coordinated School Health in a way that educators embrace and that enhances team efforts toward achieving a truly coordinated, healthy learning environment. Evidence of the success in
improving health and academic outcomes, including the narrowing of the achievement gap, will be shared, along with information on Healthy Schools, Successful Students.

Washington Smart Screen Time Summit
May 18, 2007
Doubletree Hotel Seattle Airport. - Organized by the Centers for Public Health Nutrition/Exploratory Center for Obesity Research at the University of Washington and the Washington State Department of Health. The goals of this meeting were to provide up-to-date information about the impact of screen time (e.g., TV, videos, DVDs, video games) in childhood and to review existing screen reduction programs. We also gathered input from participants that will lead to a comprehensive and coordinated Washington plan for promoting smart screen use. The target audience for this summit was health professionals, educators, public health practitioners, and childcare providers, from throughout Washington State. Featured speakers included Dimitri Christakis, MD, MPH, Director of the UW Child Health Institute, and Barbara Brock, PhD, Professor of Recreation Management, Eastern Washington University.

Poverty and Obesity: Disparities in Diet and Health - March 2, 2007

At this one-day conference researchers, economists, funders, and policymakers addressed the relationship between poverty and economic and physical access to healthy foods. We believe this a major issue of local, national, and global health concern. The conference was organized by Adam Drewnowski, PhD, Professor of Epidemiology and ECOR Director, and Roland Sturm, PhD, Senior Economist at the Rand Corporation. The audience included researchers, public health practitioners, funders, policymakers, and community members.

California Childhood Obesity Conference: Protecting the Future of our Children - January 23-26, 2007
Anaheim Marriot, Anaheim, CA - Building on previous year’s conferences, the 2007 California Childhood Obesity Conference increased public awareness of prevention policies and efforts that support healthy eating and physical activity environments with a focus on strategies that meet the needs of high-risk and low income communities. Donna Johnson presented on two projects, Active Bodies Active Minds and Promoting Family Meals in WIC.

McMcGill Integrative Health Challenge Think Tank: Forging a Societal Action plan in Preventing Childhood Obesity Around the World- Oct 26-27, 2006
Montreal - CPHN Director, Adam Drewnowski participated in the Think Tank which convened leading academics, professionals, and decision- and policy-makers from the domains of health, education, agriculture and food, leisure and sports, urban planning, media, finance, management, law, politics and economy to develop a bolder approach to the prevention of childhood obesity around the world. Participants forged the draft version of a societal plan for childhood obesity prevention currently in the making the by the Global Prevention Alliance, a partnership among five international medical associations that works in close collaboration with the World Health Organization.

Fourth King County Overweight Prevention Initiative Forum: Momentum!

Des Moines, WA - This meeting was part of an ongoing countywide effort to bring together community organizations, government agencies, and academic researchers to develop innovative and effective strategies for preventing and controlling overweight and obesity in our region.
The meeting was sponsored by the King County Board of Health, Public Health-Seattle & King County, and the University of Washington Exploratory Center for Obesity Research (ECOR) and Center for Public Health Nutrition. James Sallis, PhD, from San Diego State State University spoke about Policies to Promote Evidence-Based Physical Activity Interventions.
