frequently asked questions
Q Where are the Dance Program offices and studios?

A

Second floor Meany Hall. There are two public entrances.

  1. Off Red Square just west of Gerberding Hall. Enter at the door farthest right.
  2. Just off 15th Avenue NE across the access road to the Henry Art Gallery. This is the lower level entrance and the location of the Dance program locker rooms. Take the elevator or stairs to the upper level of Meany Hall.
  3. The director and some faculty are housed in offices on the second floor of Cunningham Hall. Cunningham is south of Meany Hall across from the Architecture building.

Q

How do I figure out what level dance class is right for me?

A

Dance 101, Introduction to Dance, is a good choice for someone who’s never had any sort of movement training. The class involves 4 days a week in the studio learning basic movement fundamentals for both ballet and modern. The final day of the week involves a more traditional lecture providing some background on the history of dance as an art form.

If you’ve had some movement training in the past (any form of dance, martial arts, gymnastics, cheerleading, etc) you could consider Dance 102, Introduction to Dance. The course requires Dance 101as a prerequisite or permission of the instructor (email the instructor about your experience if you haven’t taken Dance 101 and see if they will let you take 102).

Dance 104, Modern Technique I and Dance 107, Ballet Technique I are both high level beginning courses in Dance. These courses assume multiple years of previous dance training and a solid familiarity with dance steps and terminology.

Q The Dance course I want to take requires an add code. How do I get that?
A

Add codes for class registration are available on a first-come, first-serve basis once registration for any given quarter begins. Email the program at uwdance@u.washington.edu or visit the Dance Program office in Meany 262 to request the code. Have the course number and SLN and be ready to answer a few questions about the appropriateness of the course for you. If there’s room in the class and you have the requisite skills, you’ll receive an add code.

Q How do I sign up for the Dance Minor?
A

Once you have a minimum of 90 credits, you can sign up for the Dance Minor. Because the paperwork only takes a few minutes, feel free to stop by during regular office hours to complete the form. If you have questions about the minor and want some advising support as part of declaring a Dance minor, please make an appointment with the Dance program advisor to discuss your questions. The advising office is located in Meany 260 and there are advising sign up times posted outside the office.

Q How do I apply to be a Dance Major?
A

Twice each year UW students can apply to be Dance majors.

  • Autumn quarter (must be enrolled in technique).
  • Winter quarter (includes a technique assessment class).
Specific dates will be posted.

The application includes the following:

  1. Unofficial copy of college transcript(s)
  2. Essay question (maximum two pages)
  3. Goal Statement (maximum one page)
  4. A technique assessment

Faculty will meet to discuss each applicant and review the written materials. All applicants are notified of their status approximately three weeks after the submission deadline. Students should contact the Dance Program office with any questions about becoming a Dance major. (Complete details on the application process can be found on the Dance Program web site.)

Q

Dance 101 is full. How do I get on the wait list?

A There is no wait list. Students interested in the course may show up on the first day of class and ask the instructor if space has become available.
Q

What opportunities are there to perform?

A Any students enrolled in UW technique classes are eligible to audition for any Dance Program concerts (there are no open auditions for Chamber Dance Company). Audition dates and times are always posted in the hallways outside of the Dance program studios. If students are selected to perform, they must remain actively enrolled in at least one technique class through the final performance of the concert.
Q

Is there a dress code for technique classes?

A

There is no formal dress code for Dance Program classes. All students should be dressed in clothing that is loose enough to allow for easy movement, but not so baggy that the instructor can’t observe the details of how a student is moving. Hair needs to be pulled back and away from the face. Ballet slippers or socks should be worn for ballet class. Bare feet or socks should be worn for modern. Students in jazz can wear jazz shoes, ballet slippers, socks or bare feet.

Q

Where do I change? And where do I put my clothes during class?

A

Dance majors may get a locker in the dressing room on the lower level of Meany Hall. Dance minors may also have a locker as space allows and on a first come, first-served basis. Students sign up for lockers with Dance Program staff. All other students have access to the day use lockers on the second floor of Meany Hall. All students are strongly encouraged to use a lock on their locker. Meany Hall is a public building and theft has been a problem. All students may change in the locker rooms on the lower level of Meany Hall. Changing is not allowed in the second floor bathrooms.

Q

How can I get involved in the Dance Student Association?

A

Contact information for the Dance Student Association changes from year to year. Current contacts are posted on the Dance program bulletin boards on the second floor of Meany Hall. The Dance Student Association faculty adviser is Jen Salk.
