DISTINGUISHED TEACHING AWARD
Associate Professor Betsy Cooper, was the recipient of the prestigious Distinguished Teaching Award, given by the UW to outstanding educators. The Dance Program’s reaction?
This highly competitive and prestigious award is given to faculty who possess a mastery of the subject matter, and enthusiasm and innovation in the learning/teaching process. The award brings pride to the Dance Program and we are grateful that the university has recognized what we already know about Professor Cooper. I am awed and inspired by Betsy’s breadth and depth of knowledge.
-Jen Salk, Assistant Professor in the Dance Program
The subject of dance is often dismissed as less than intellectual, however Professor Cooper’s devotion to historical study and scientific understanding of the art form leaves no question that dance belongs in academia. Professor Cooper teaches with the authority of experience and research. Students are continually engaged by her enthusiasm in the pursuit and analysis of dance culture. She pushes students to keep digging into the history of dance, seeking the roots and development of our art form as well as dance’s role in cultural evolutions. Professor Cooper’s creation of a writing lab has created a dance resource that enhances the study of any subject, developing many students’ communication skills. Professor Cooper also maintains a positive and supportive atmosphere. This is particularly vital in the realm of dance, where eating disorders and negative body-images can be epidemic. Professor Cooper shows respect and affection for all shapes and sizes.
-Jamie Stults, Dance major
