Reduced Credit Load

Description

Reduced Credit Load is an accommodation approved by DRS on an individual basis through an interactive process between DRS and the student. It must be supported by documented effects of the student’s disability. The Reduced Credit Load accommodation is approved by DRS when a student’s disability prevents them from successfully completing the full 12 credit load required by financial aid. Undergraduate students with disabilities approved for the Reduced Credit Load accommodation may take 11 credits or fewer and still maintain priority consideration for financial aid in following quarters. Students must be enrolled for a minimum number of credits and maintain satisfactory academic progress in order to maintain eligibility for financial aid.

Once a Reduced Credit Load has been approved as an accommodation, students may complete the Priority Aid Appeal Reduced Credit Load form each quarter to indicate the number of credits they will be taking. This accommodation must be established at least 4 weeks prior to the beginning of the quarter and cannot be retroactively applied once financial aid has been disbursed.

Financial aid packages are complex in nature. Using the Reduced Credit Load accommodation may effect three key areas:

  • The overall amount of financial aid a student receives
  • Timeline for degree completion
  • Eligibility for campus housing

It is important for students to understand how the Reduced Credit Load accommodation effects these key areas before deciding to move forward with the accommodation. Students should work collaboratively with a DRS Coordinator, a counselor in the Office of Student Financial Aid (OSFA), and their academic advisor to understand the complexities surrounding a Reduced Credit Load accommodation. Graduate students should work closely with a DRS Coordinator to determine how a Reduced Credit Load accommodation may apply to their program and financial aid status.
