Two graduates of the UW Law School have begun their terms as members of the Board of Regents. Constance L. Proctor and William H. Gates, Jr., were appointed in December by Gov. Gary Locke. Proctor was appointed to a full term, which lasts until Sept. 30, 2003; Gates was appointed to fill the remainder of the term of Ann Daley, who resigned, an d will serve until Sept. 30, 2000. Proctor graduated cum laude from Vassar College in 1972 and received her J.D. from the UW Law School in 1978. She is an attorney with the firm Alston, Courmage, Proctor and Bassetti. Her legal practice emphasizes real estate law. In 1994 she was nam ed Outstanding Lawyer of the Year by the King County Bar Association. Proctor is a member of the board of directors of the Seattle branch of the Federal Reserve Bank of San Francisco. She also is on the board of trustees of Children's Hospital and Medical Center, the Seattle Symphony and Mothers Against Violence in Amer ica. She is a founder and steering committee member of the African American Heritage Endowment fund. She also is a member of the UW Law School Dean's Advisory Board. Gates, who received a B.S. from the UW in 1949 and an L.L.B. from the UW in 1950, has worked at the law firm of Preston Gates & Ellis since 1964. He serves on the board of directors of the Center for Naval Analysis, the Washington Research Foundat ion and Mutual of American Capital Management Corporation. He also serves on the board of trustees of the Seattle Foundation and the board of trustees of the Oregon Shakes-peare Festival Association. He has been a leader in a variety of civic groups suc h as the Boy Scouts of America, United Way of King County, and the Greater Seattle Chamber of Commerce. Gates received the UW Law School Distinguished Alumnus award in 1991 and the Washington State Bar Award of Merit in 1992. ¶ |
