Federal Income Tax Withholding

Employees must file a new Form W-4, "Employee's Withholding Allowance Certificate" if their filing status, exemption allowances, or exempt status has changed since the last filing of their Form W-4.

If they claimed exemption from federal income tax withholding during 1997, they need to determine if they are eligible to renew their claim for 1998. If they are eligible to renew their claim for exemption, they must submit a new Form W-4, "Employee's Withholding Allowance Certificate", to the Payroll Office by Jan. 30. Otherwise, the University is required by law to withold federal income tax from their wages as if they were single and claimed no withholding allowances.

To obtain a Form W-4, please call the Payroll Forms Request Line at 543-9203.

U.S. Tax Obligations for Visiting International Scholars Explained

Information regarding tax obligations for international scholars holding H or J visas will be provided at a workshop from 35 p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 19, in 153 Mueller Hall. Tax information for students will be presented in the same room from 12:302:30 p.m. on the same day. A second workshop for international scholars will be held from 35 p.m. on Wednesday, Mar. 4, in 209A HUB.

Scholars may be subject to U.S. taxation based on the source and type of income and the number of years they have been present in the US. Tax treaties with over 40 countries may alter tax liabilities. Persons with J visas must file a tax return form even if they have no U.S. source income.

There is no charge for the workshop, which is sponsored by the International Services Office. For further information, call the ISO at 543-0841.
