A World War I memorial plaque that disappeared from the campus has been re-installed near the Northeast 45th Street gate after it was discovered among the possessions of an artist who had recently died. The artist, Lawrence Beck, liked to collect materials at junk yards to use in his work and had apparently found the plaque in that way, not knowing where it originally came from. When the auctioneers who were handling an estate sale saw the plaque, they called the artist's son to ask for a release on the item. He gladly gave it, and the plaque was returned to the UW. No one is sure how the plaque was lost in the first place, but the theory goes that a contractor accidentally hauled it off with the refuse after completing some work in the area. The UW hired another artist to embed the plaque in a piece of granite before returning it to its rightful place. Posing with the memorial are, left to right, Norm Kwasinski, the gardener in that area of campus; along with D.J. Domingo Andrade, utility worker; and Bob Murray, heavy equipment operator, who helped move the plaque into its place.
