FOND FAREWELL: Doug Kelbaugh, chair of the Department of Architecture for eight years and currently a professor in the same department, is leaving the UW to be the dean of the College of Architecture and Urban Planning at the University of Michigan. Kelbaugh's tenure as chair, which began in 1985, included the introduction of architecture charrettes, a new journal of architecture and a number of new design studios. Since 1989 he has also practiced architecture with his firm Kelbaugh, Calthorpe and Associates. Kelbaugh says he wasn't looking for a job, but that Michigan made him the proverbial offer he couldn't refuse. He and his wife plan to rent their Capitol Hill house, with the hope that they can return to Seattle some day.
