EXCELLENT SOUND: An educational CD-ROM developed by a team at the Applied Physics Lab and funded by Washington Sea Grant Program has won first place in the National Association of Government Communicators' Gold Screen awards competition. It also received an Achievement Award from the Society of Technical Communications, Puget Sound chapter. A judge for the NAGC competition said, "This CD must be a labor of love by the producers. Excellent job on content and clarity of execution. This is an excellent educational source...Very interesting for adults as well. It's a '10' because of its educational value alone." The Sound CD-ROM has become a model teaching tool that reaches virtually all grade levels. It includes seven pull-down menus covering properties, ecosystems, species, status, marine affairs, solutions and recreation. Since its publication in May 1997, nearly 5,000 copies have been distributed free to K-12 schools. Copies are also available for sale.

DIAMOND AWARD: The UW's transportation program was among 16 winners of Diamond Awards in the Commuter Challenge sponsored by the Economic Development Council of Seattle and King County and a partnership of 21 local and state government agencies. The award is given to employers who encourage staff not to drive alone to work.
