Feb. 19, 1998 Academic Opportunities Dean and Vice Provost, University of Washington, Bothell The University of Washington invites nominations and applications for the position of Dean and Vice Provost of its Bothell campus. The University of Washington, Bothell (UWB) was established in 1990 to provide innovative and exemplary upper-division and graduate programs to residents of the north and northeast Puget Sound region. Current academic programs include Business Administration, Computing and Software Systems, Education, Liberal Studies, and Nursing. The campus offers day and evening classes, part- and full-time study options and small, highly interactive classes. It emphasizes teaching and research excellence and is particularly well oriented to serve students with diverse backgrounds. UWB is located 20 miles northeast of downtown Seattle, serving fast-growing suburban communities in the region's high-technology corridor. The permanent campus for UWB, which will be co-located with Cascadia Community College, is scheduled to open in autumn of the year 2000. UWB is a dynamic, innovative institution that is undergoing rapid growth and expansion, with enrollments projected to increase from 1,100 students currently to 7,000 students by 2010. UWB is part of an evolving three-campus University that includes the University of Washington, Seattle (UWS) and the University of Washington, Tacoma (UWT). The Dean and Vice Provost serves as UWB's chief academic and executive officer and will play a major leadership role in setting the course for growth and development of the campus into the 21st century. Responsibilities of the position have both internal and external components and include: oversight of campus-wide academic program and academic support planning and development; planning for co-located UWB-Cascadia Community College campuses; capital development; fund-raising; building and maintaining partnerships with other educational institutions, community groups and businesses; establishing effective working relationships with state legislators and government staff; collaboration and coordination with UWS and UWT. The Dean and Vice Provost is a member of the University of Washington Board of Deans and reports directly to the University Provost. Candidates should have significant academic and administrative experience and must be qualified for a tenured appointment at the rank of professor. In addition to academic excellence, the successful candidate is likely to possess an entrepreneurial spirit and a willingness to take risks.
