Recycle Baler
980030-33
Ever wonder what happens to all that paper you put in the recycling bin? At least some of it goes into a recently purchased baler shown in the photo above at the Recycling Services warehouse. The paper first goes up a conveyor belt at the right to a bin in which it is compressed and wrapped in wire. Then, the bin door, lower left, is opened to reveal the paper, now reduced to something approximating a rectangle. At this point warehouse lead Darryl Vanlandingham, photo below, retrieves the paper with a forklift, stacking it up to be hauled away. The machine permits Recycling Services to create bales weighing between 1,100 and 1,600 pounds, compared to about 800 pounds worth of paper that used to be contained in cages of about the same size. Not only are they able to haul away more paper at a time, says recycling coordinator Clarissa Szabados-Mish, but they also are able to sell it for a higher price because in this form it is ready to be marketed by the vendor.

Eugene Vance
Eugene Vance, UW professor of French, Comparative Literature and Comparative Religion, will speak at 8 p.m. today in 220 Kane on Tragedy, Theatricality and Eschatology in Augustine's City of God. His lecture is part of the Solomon Katz Distinguished Lecturers in the Humanities Series. Vance will discuss Augustine's polemics against Roman theater as the negative side of a restless quest for "spectacles" that might disclose to the faithful of God's great plan as it might be fulfilled at the end of time. St. Augustine (354-430) wrote his gigantic summa defending Christianity against non-Christian Romans who blamed the religion for the sack of Rome in 410. The period was also a time when Christians were devising new cultural forms of their own.

Street Law

Law school lecturer Julia Gold, left, talks to a group of middle school students while presenting her "Street Law" program to them recently. The kids were among a group of 50 minority students from area middle schools who visited the law school, thanks to a grant from the Law School Admissions Council that was matched by the Office of Minority Affairs. In addition to participating in the Street Law Program—which introduces common legal principles—the visitors heard from law students, faculty and visiting Judge Richard Jones. They also received a lot of information about college admissions requirements and what they should take in high school. The law school will host minority high schoolers for a similar visit Feb. 20.
