PRESS AWARD: The UW Press has received a $90,000 grant from the Getty Grant Program to support the publication of four new titles documenting Northwest Coast Native art. The four books—to be published over the next several years—include The Youquot Whaler's Shrine: A Study in Representation, by Aldona Jonaitis; Totem Poles and Eskimo Things: Ye Olde Curiosity Shop, Seattle, and Enduring Images of Alaskan and Northwest Coast Native Art, by Kate Corbin Duncan; Privileging the Past: Historicism in the Art of the Northwest Coast, by Judith Ostrowitz; and Those Who Worked on Totem Poles: Nineteenth-Century Northern Haida Carvers, by the UW's own Robin Wright, curator of native American art at the Burke Museum.

PIRATES WANTED: Always had a hankering to be a pirate? No, not the kind that take people's money—the kind that wear patches over one eye and scarves around their heads. Well, now's your chance, because the Seattle Seafair Pirates are soliciting applications for new members. The only qualification is that you be over 21 and interested in serving the community. Although they may look scary, for almost 50 years the pirates have given their time and effort to charitable causes in the community, particularly those focusing on children. They also act as goodwill ambassadors, promoting Seattle and the Seafair Festival across the Pacific Northwest and beyond. To receive more information and an application for the Seafair Pirates candidate program, call 521-3300, or send a stamped, self-addressed envelope to Seafair Pirates—candidate applications, PO Box 30674, Greenwood Station, Seattle, WA 98103.

KUDOS: Louis Fox, vice-provost for educational partnerships, was one of the "young leaders" recently listed by Change, the journal of the American Association for Higher Education. The journal named more than 80 people as "past, present and future leaders of higher education." ¶

Do you know someone who deserves "kudos" for an outstanding achievement, award, appointment or book publication? If so, please send that person's name, title and achievement to "Kudos," University Week, Box 351207.
