More than 200 UW alumni and friends were in the state capital for UW Day in Olympia, Wednesday, Feb. 18. President Richard L. McCormick, above, presided at a recognition ceremony in the Rotunda honoring Mary Gates Scholars and others. Mrs. Joan Waldo, below, congratulated Warren A. Bishop, the first recipient of the Robert G. Waldo Award, established in honor of her late husband.

Below are luncheon panelists Rep. Helen Sommers, ranking minority member of the House Appropriations Committee; Sen. James West, chair of the Senate Ways and Means Committee; luncheon keynote speaker, UW regent William Gates, who also is chair of the Technology Alliance, and Eldridge. The panel also included Rep. Don Carlson, chair of the House Higher Education Committee; and Chris Hedrick, executive policy advisor for science and technology in the Office of the Governor. The day concluded with a reception for elected officials hosted by Don and Marguerite Daniels.
