102 nominated for staff awards

One hundred and two UW staff employees, including two teams, were nominated for the second Distinguished Staff Awards, a $3,000 award given to up to five outstanding staff members.

Recipients of the awards will be announced this spring. President Richard L. McCormick will present the awards at the annual recognition dinner in June.

Staff members from the Seattle, Bothell and Tacoma campuses were eligible.

Nominees had to demonstrate the following characteristics:

  • superior sustained or special one-time contribution to the mission of the unit or the University,
  • exceptional creativity and innovation,
  • superior responsiveness in delivering service to the unit's clients,
  • clear dedication to high standards in his/her own work and in that of others, and
  • continuous contribution to a positive work environment.

"Although only five employees can be recipients of the cash award each year, all of the staff nominated are exceptional and deserving of recognition," said Weldon Ihrig, executive vice president.

Patricia A. Wrobel, administrator of Undergraduate Education and chair of the Distinguished Staff Awards committee, said: "The Selection Committee is grateful to the hundreds of faculty, students and staff who wrote letters of support. You have provided us with an outstanding and diverse pool of applicants, all of whom deserve special recognition."

This is the first time Distinguished Staff Awards will be given at the University's annual recognition dinner in June along with the Distinguished Teaching and Outstanding Public Services awards. The awards were instituted for the first time this fall and were one of the recommendations of the UW Rewards and Recognition Task Force, a group of staff members charged with considering various ways to improve University recognition of staff.
