Regents to discuss faculty responsibilities, rewards

Faculty responsibilities and rewards will be the topic of a one-day retreat sponsored by the UW Board of Regents on Saturday, April 4 in the HUB Ballroom. It is free and open to all members of the UW campus community.

Over the last eight months, the board of Regents has held focused public discussions about teaching and learning and about faculty research. During Spring Quarter the Board will turn its attention to issues of faculty responsibilities and rewards, including tenure, academic freedom, faculty development, post-tenure review, faculty salaries and workload, accountability, and other important aspects of faculty work life.

Two distinguished authorities on faculty responsibilities and rewards have been invited to make presentations:
Dr. Ernst Benjamin, associate general secretary and director of research at the American Association of University Professors (AAUP), and Dr. Richard Chait, professor of higher education at the Harvard Graduate School of Education.

Benjamin, who served as general secretary of the national office of the AAUP from 198494, will talk about the history and importance of academic freedom and tenure. Chait, nationally known for his work on academic administration and trusteeship, will speak on the future of tenure, alternatives to tenure and post-tenure review. He is author of Beyond Traditional Tenure and Improving the Performance of Governing Boards. He is currently involved in a funded study of "Faculty Employment Arrangements for the 21st Century."

The day also will include discussions with UW faculty and faculty leaders on these and other topics related to faculty rewards and responsibilities. A schedule of presentations will be published in the April 2 edition of University Week. ¶
