Sundial
Besides cherry blossoms and daffodils, another campus sign of spring is the large sundial facing the Burke-Gilman Trail on the Physics/Astronomy Building. This photo was taken only four hours after the moment of the vernal equinox on March 20, marking the northwards passage of the sun across the celestial equator and the official start of spring. The sundial annually indicates this event when the shadow of its ball tracks over the day exactly along the tilted, straight line labeled "Equinox." Since its construction in 1994, the dial has now gone through four complete cycles and is heading on to its fifth summer solstice (the lower curved line). The dial was designed by Professor Woodruff Sullivan of the Astronomy Department and fabricated by Larry Stark of the Physics Instrument Shop. KS980196_2 and KS980196_9
