Regents discuss faculty roles, rewards
The first of four discussions concerning faculty responsibilities and rewards will be an all-day retreat Saturday, April 4 in the HUB Ballroom. It is free and open to all members of the campus community. The sessions are sponsored by the UW Board of Regents.
The schedule for Saturday is:
9 a.m.: Opening remarks by President Richard L. McCormick;
9:20 a.m.: System & Structure of Tenure: National and Local Perspectives, by Steven G. Olswang, vice provost, and Miceàl F. Vaughan, secretary of the faculty and associate professor of English and Comparative Literature;
10 a.m.: An American Association of University Professors (AAUP) Perspective, by Ernst Benjamin, associate general secretary and director of research, AAUP. He was the general secretary of the national office of the AAUP from 1984-94, and will talk about the history and importance of academic freedom and tenure.
11 a.m.: Stressors and Alternatives to Tenure by Richard Chait, professor of Higher Education, Harvard University. Chait, author of Beyond Traditional Tenure and Improving the Performance of Governing Boards, is currently involved in a funded study of "Faculty Employment Arrangements for the 21st Century."
1 p.m. University Faculty Perspective: A Panel Discussion by John M. Wallace, professor, Atmospheric Sciences, chair; Kathryn Dewenter, assistant professor, Finance; Albert W. Black, Jr., senior lecturer, Sociology; Marjorie E. Anderson, professor, Rehabilitation Medicine; Paul D. Collins, associate professor, Business, UWB; and Lawrence J. Bliquez, professor, Classics.
2 p.m. Dialogue with Provost Lee L. Huntsman, moderator; members, Board of Regents; Vandra Huber, chair, Faculty Council on Faculty Affairs and professor of Management and Organization; Mark McDermott, chair, Faculty Senate, professor of Physics; Chait, and Benjamin.
The other meetings include Faculty Salary Structure on Friday, April 17 and Accountability, Productivity and Rewards Structure on Friday, May 17. Both of these discussions will be in the Regents' Strategic Planning Committee meeting. The fourth session, on the Faculty Responsibilities and Rewards Committee, will be during the meeting of the Board of Regents on Friday, June 12. The time and place of these sessions will be announced in future issues of University Week. ¶
