INTERNET 2: Computer Science and Engineering Chair Ed Lazowska and Vice President for Computing and Communications Ron Johnson are among the initial members of the advisory committees that will guide higher education's advanced networking efforts, including the Internet 2 project. Drawn from industry, academia and government, the advisory council members have all made significant contributions to Internet development, and will assist in advanced application development, network policy and planning, and network research. Lazowska will serve on the Network Research Liaison Council, while Johnson will be part of The Network Planning and Policy Advisory Council.

TELLY AWARD: The program, Talking and Books: Language is the Key, produced for the Washington Research Institute, has taken a bronze in the education category of the Telly Awards. UW staffers responsible for the program included producer Al Ross, videographer Karel Bauer, editor Noah Pitzer, graphic designer April Ryan and writer Kevin Cole. Also involved were writer Mary Maddox and on-camera talent Linda Kennedy. Telly awards are based on a program achieving a given score on a previously established scale, rather than on entries competing with each other. Bronze awards are given to finalists, about 14 to 18 percent of the entrants. Talking and Books: Language is the Key is a program that demonstrates simple techniques that parents can use with books to encourage their young children to speak and develop language skills. Actual examples of the techniques are shown. The program is intended for parents, especially those for whom English is not their native language.

KUDOS: Kurt Cuffey of the UW Geology Dept. won one out of four student awards in the competition sponsored by the Arctic Research Consortium of the US (ARCUS) for Arctic Research Excellence. His paper is entitled "Temperature, accumulation, and ice sheet elevation in central Greenland through the last deglacial transition." ¶
